The June 2oth 2o15 Report by Jennie
It was another beautiful day in Chicago where we had planned a full day of exploring and eating. We've been to Chicago many times and had planned to go to Cloud Gate (aka "the Bean") and Millennium Park during the day. Later in the evening, after dinner we wanted to go to Navy Pier to see the fireworks but we weren't sure if we would make it on time. The closest thing to do was to go back to the Bean and see it at night (something we've never done before but heard it was just as cool!).
At the Bean, we were able to take one picture but then it started to thunder and lightning. For safety reasons, the security guards had to close down the park. As we were leaving, it started to pour down rain, so we ran over to the Walgreens to grab an umbrella and let the rain storm pass. Tommy being passionate (and stubborn) about taking pictures wanted to go back to the Bean. As the rain let up, we went back to the Bean hoping that they would reopen. We were walking in circles and finally decided to ask the security guards if we could take another picture. Tommy ran ahead and started to talk to them and I fell behind but quickly ran behind him to keep from getting wet. All of a sudden, I was stopped by the other security guard and he said "Ma'am he needs to ask him (the other Security Guard) a question over there." So I waited in the corner from a distance while watching Tommy and the security guard have what I thought was a "really good conversation." After a few minutes, Tommy ran over and said they would let us take a picture. We quickly ran under the Bean... I started to look up and ask Tommy what picture he wanted to take since we were there earlier in the day. By the time I had looked back at him, he was already down on one knee ready to propose! He popped the question and the rest is history...
Before heading out to Chicago, Tommy had packed his bags and the Ring. Jennie being the good girlfriend had wanted to pack snacks in Tommy's bag to prevent Hangery Syndrome and almost ruined it!
We are huge foodies. On that day, we had Italian for lunch at RPM Italian (they are opening in DC!) and ate foie gras and burgers at Au Cheval.
Most refreshed website of the day? Google Weather 60607. Tommy had intended to knock out the burger and run over to the Navy Pier to time the proposal right before fireworks went off! 50% precipitation turned to 25% (yes!), then steadily ramped back up to 100% throughout dinner.
That felt good. Having circled the Bean multiple times trying to figure out what to do, Tommy finally ran towards the guards leaving Jennie behind. The guards quickly setup a perimeter and having heard him, told Jennie to back away as she approached (played the part by using a stern voice too!).
It's okay.. put away the knife. As proof, the guards asked Tommy to see the ring. Tommy had been carrying it in a plastic pouch and couldn't seem to pull out the ring. The guard offered him his knife which Tommy politely declined. This was going down as Jennie was 20 ft away.
Boom goes the sky. She said yes, with the guards cheering in the background. The fireworks did also go off at the same time, despite all the rain!
